OWEESTA is actively seeking partners within the donor and investment communities to further our goal of increased capacity among Native communities. The success of Native CDFIs and other support organizations across the nation demonstrates that projects in low-income communities are good investments in the well being of all communities. OWEESTA needs capital to satisfy growing demand our financial and development services throughout Native communities.
Several vehicles are available to individuals and institutions wanting to assist OWEESTA in meeting Native community development needs:
- Operating Support
- Capital Grants
- Capital Loans
- Targeted Support for Training & TA
Donations to OWEESTA might take one or more of the following forms:
- Donate directly via Network for Good, or mail in a donation.
- Matching gifts. Many employers match donations made by their employees to charitable organizations. Check with your human resources or personnel office about your company's matching gifts program. If your gift qualifies, your contribution can double the impact of OWEESTA’s efforts to assist Native communities.
- Combined Federal Campaign. OWEESTA participates in the CFC (#1102). If you are a federal employee, you may choose to donate through a payroll deduction.
- Bequests. You can name OWEESTA (or another affiliate like First Nations Development Institute) to receive a specific amount of money, percentage or property of your estate; to receive all or a portion of the residual of your estate (the remainder after all specific bequests to family and friends are fulfilled); or to be the contingent beneficiary in case your named individual beneficiaries do not survive you. For gifts that will take effect after your lifetime, OWEESTA should be named as: First Nations Oweesta Corporation, a nonprofit corporation with the principal business address of The Lakota Trade Center, BIA Hwy 2 Suite 107, P.O. Box 280, Kyle, SD 57752. For your reference, our tax identification number is 54-1970097.
- Gifts of securities. OWEESTA accepts gifts of publicly traded stocks, mutual funds, and bonds. Gifts of securities can reduce income and gift estate taxes and avoid capital gains taxes on appreciated assets. You may inform your broker or banker that you wish to donate securities to OWEESTA.
Natives Support Native CDFIs
Recently OWEESTA has made a direct appeal to Native groups, tribes and individuals to consider investing tribal dollars into the Native CDFI movement, either directly into a local Native CDFI or through the growing network of Native financial institutions that we at OWEESTA work with on a daily basis. This message is one that takes the concept of socially-responsible investing and ties it to the importance of reinvesting in Native communities through development organizations like Native CDFIs. Please see the recent Indian Country Today editorial column [PDF] and if you have any questions about the process of creating and/or investing in Native CDFIs, please contact us. |
